Silver Coin 2021 Malta (10 €) – “100th Anniversary of the Maltese Self-Government Constitution of 1921”
€90.00 includes 22% VAT
On April 30, 1921, hundreds of Maltese gathered in Valletta to witness the adoption of a new constitution. After one hundred and twenty years of British rule, the Maltese’s aspirations for autonomy in local affairs seemed to have come true. The constitution established a dual power, according to which the elected Maltese government was responsible for local affairs, and the imperial government was responsible for “closed matters,” including defense and foreign policy. The first Maltese parliament was inaugurated on November 1, 1921, by Prince Edward of Wales.
The Maltese experiment with self-government did not last long, as the constitution was withdrawn in 1936. However, it paved the way for further constitutional development, culminating in Malta’s achievement of political independence from Britain in 1964.
The motif of the coin depicts a woman symbolizing the independence of Malta. She wears a robe, wears a crown on her head and hangs the Maltese flag. The motive is surrounded by the inscriptions “CENTENARY CONSTITUTION OF SELF-GOVERNMENT” and “1921-2021”. The 10 Euro denomination is also included in the design.
