The clouded leopard is a vulnerable species and is under protection. Inhabits dense forests from the foothills of the Himalayas through the mainland of Southeast Asia to South China. Its color is characterized by large dark gray spots and stripes resembling clouds. The clouded leopard is the first cat to genetically split from a common pantherine ancestor between 9.32 and 4.47 million years ago. Today, the clouded leopard is locally extinct in Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly Hainan Island and Vietnam. Its total population is thought to be less than 10,000 adults, with a declining population trend, and no population has more than 1,000 adults.
