5 euro silver coin Greece 2021 – Bellflower Campanula saxatilis
€30.00 includes 22% VAT
The third coin in the series is dedicated to Campanula saxatilis. Campanula saxatilis is an endemic plant of Crete, growing mainly in the coastal areas of the western part of the island. This is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in crevices and cracks in rocks and gorges, and sometimes on the walls of ruined castles and monasteries at an altitude of up to 400 m above sea level. Blooms from April to early June. It is listed as Vulnerable (VU) in the Red Book of Rare and Endangered Plants of Greece due to its small total population and the limited area occupied by its subpopulations. On the islands of Kitira and Antikythera, another subspecies occurs, Campanula saxatilis subsp. cytherea, which is characterized by larger and wider tubular flowers.
On the obverse there is a colored image of the Campanula saxatilis bell, to the right of which the year of issue of the coin is indicated – “2021” and the sign of the Greek Mint. The inscriptions are minted around the circumference: the name of the series – “ΕΝΔΗΜΙΚΑ ΦΥΤΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΑΣ” and the name of the coin – “CAMPANULA SAXATILIS”. On the reverse, a bluebell flower is depicted in the background. At the top is the coat of arms of Greece. A legend is minted around the circumference: the name of the issuer’s country is “ELLHNIKH DHMOKPATIA” and the face value of the coin is “5 EYPΩ”. Just below the center there is a graphic sign of the coin’s designer – M. Antonatou
