Chios massacre – the massacre of the Turks on April 11, 1822 over the inhabitants of the island of Chios because the islanders supported the fighters for the independence of Greece.
Of the 120,000 inhabitants of the island, about 115 thousand were Orthodox Greeks, the rest were Catholics, Turks and Jews. The victims of the massacre were children under 3 years old, boys and men over 12 years old and women over 40 years old. Up to 25,000 were killed, about 45,000 were sold into slavery and about 23,000 fled the island, forming the Chios diaspora. The remaining inhabitants were converted to Islam. After that, the island lost its economic importance. The population of Chios never regained its former size.
