Silver coin 5 euro Latvia 2015 – 500th anniversary of Riga Castle
€55.00 includes 22% VAT
The accepted date for the construction of Riga Castle is 1515: it was in this year that the inscriptions under the stone figures of the Madonna and the Master of the Livonian Order Voltaire von Plettenberg (1494–1535) above the castle gates were completed. The same year is also mentioned in written documents about the cost of construction. The oldest graphic images of the completed castle with views of Riga date back to 1589, 1603 and 1612. The 1612 image, printed by Nikolai Mollin’s printing house in Riga, shows the castle in great detail with an extension on the north side, fortifications and a gate tower.
Obverse: stone stucco on the gate of the convent of the Riga Castle with the image of the Madonna and the Master of the Livonian Order Voltaire von Plettenberg.
Reverse: bird’s eye view of the stylized Riga Castle.
