Marta Stania (1913–1972) is an outstanding figure in the history of architecture, design and art of the 20th century. Her architectural works were realized between the 1950s and 1970s. Although most of her works have not survived in their original form, Stany’s most significant achievement, the Dailes Theatre building, continues to proudly serve its cultural role and stands as an enduring testament to modernist architecture, remaining accessible to the public today. Stanya combined cutting-edge ideas for museums, cafes and office buildings, the possibilities of form and innovative materials with compassion for the environment, nature and people. The architect designed the space and its objects as a single ensemble. Stanya was also a gifted artist, vividly bringing her architectural concepts to life through visualization on paper. The coin depicts fragments of Stani’s sketches: her two most notable works in Riga – the Dailes Theatre and the experimental apartment building on 313 Brivibas Street – as well as unrealised projects: sketches for the observation tower in Gaiziņkalns, the Rezekne aerial stage, the National Theatre in Budapest, as well as landscape design elements and trees, which together represent the complexity of Stani’s architectural practice. The architect also held teaching positions at the Riga School of Design and Art and the Latvian Academy of Arts. Her approach has inspired generations of artists, set designers, interior designers and designers.
