The Maltese Cross has become an iconic part of Malta’s heritage and culture for hundreds of years. This symbol is most often associated with the Knights of Malta. The origin of the cross is controversial, although it is widely believed that it originated from the cross commonly found on coins minted in the Italian Republic of Amalfi in the 11th century. He was officially received by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John in 1126, and stylistically its origin points to the crosses used in the Crusades and then known as the symbol of the “Christian warrior”. The points on the cross are said to represent the eight aspirations and duties of knights: “to live in truth, to have faith, to repent of one’s sins, to prove humility, to love justice, to be merciful, to be sincere, to endure persecution.” To this day, the Maltese Cross remains the symbol of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, an international organization dedicated to medical and humanitarian aid.
