€70.00 includes 22% VAT
The Big Five, or Big African Five, is the traditional name for five species of African mammals: elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard.
The second coin in the second series “Big Five” is dedicated to the lion.
The African lion (Panthera leo) is Africa’s largest and most important land predator. Because of its enormous strength and graceful appearance, the lion is commonly considered the “king of beasts,” a term that originates from old fairy tales. Since then, feline predators have become a symbol of power and dominance and to this day adorn countless coats of arms and flags. The lion’s impressive roar can be heard up to 8 kilometers away and is used for communication within the pack. In the wild, a lion can live up to 20 years – but to this day the threat from poachers remains great.
The obverse features a detailed close-up of the head of an adult lion. The reverse depicts two halves of a lion’s head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a complete close-up portrait of the lion. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, a whole pack of lions appears.
