€65.00 includes 22% VAT
The Big Five, or Big African Five, is the traditional name for five species of African mammals: elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard.
The third coin in the second “Big Five” series is dedicated to the rhinoceros.
Rhinoceroses (Rhinocerotidae) are a family of equid mammals from the superfamily Rhinoceros, containing five modern species distributed in Africa and Asia. Rhinoceroses live in the grasslands and woody savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. The population is estimated at around 25,000 white and black rhinos, many of which live in the Kruger National Park. After elephants, rhinoceroses are the largest and heaviest land mammals in the world. Rhinoceroses are often accompanied by birds, which sit on their skin and clean them of parasites. In rare cases, young animals can become victims of large predators from the cat family, but adult rhinoceroses have no enemies other than humans. Rhinoceroses sleep during the day; they can be found active at dusk and at night. These are very timid and cautious animals, avoiding closeness to humans. However, if they feel threatened, they attack. Once accelerated, a rhinoceros can reach a speed of 50 km/h.
The obverse features a detailed close-up of the head of an adult rhinoceros. The reverse depicts the two halves of a rhinoceros head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a complete close-up portrait of the rhinoceros. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, a whole herd of rhinoceroses appears.
