South Africa Rand 5 Silver Coin 2023 – Big Five: Buffalo
€65.00 includes 22% VAT
The Big Five, or Big African Five, is the traditional name for five species of African mammals: elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion, and leopard.
The fifth and final coin in the second “Big Five” series is dedicated to the buffalo.
The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a large African cattle native to sub-Saharan Africa. Although a typical member of the bovine subfamily, the African buffalo is, however, very distinctive and is classified as a separate genus Syncerus with a single species (it is also the only one of the bovine subfamily found in Africa). This is one of the largest modern bulls. The weight of adult males of large subspecies sometimes reaches 900-1000 kg.
The obverse features a detailed close-up of the head of an adult buffalo. The reverse features the two halves of a buffalo head. Placing two of these coins next to each other gives a complete close-up portrait of the buffalo. When several of these coins are placed next to each other, a whole herd of buffalo appears.
