In 2021, the Paris Mint opens a new series based on literary styles and authors who have contributed to the history of literature in France and abroad.
Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870) – French writer, playwright and journalist. One of the most widely read French authors, a master of the adventure novel. His two most famous books, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, were written in 1844–45.
In 2024, the Paris Mint will celebrate the memory of the famous adventure novelist Alexandre Dumas in honor of the 180th anniversary of the publication of The Three Musketeers.
The obverse of the coin depicts Alexandre Dumas opposite his iconic characters: the Four Musketeers. The famous phrase from the novel is inscribed on Dumas’ shoulder: “One for all and all for one.”
The reverse side is common for the entire series “The Art of the Pen”. It is inscribed with several symbolic quotes, such as “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” by Voltaire, “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate” by Dante Alighieri, “To be or not to be: that is the question” by William Shakespeare, or “Was micht umbringt, macht mich stärker” by Nietzsche. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and under the name of the series. The abbreviation of the French Republic “RF” is engraved in the lower right corner of the coin, as well as the distinctive mark of the design author Joaquin Jimenez.
