Philo of Byzantium, an engineer of the 3rd century BC, describes this invention in his “Pneumatics”. This is a mechanism (robot) in the form of a waiter (life-size), holding a bowl of wine in his right hand. Inside the statue were two vessels, one with wine and one with water (since the Greeks drank wine diluted), and a mechanism with tubes for transporting liquids and air. Placing the cup in the waiter’s outstretched left hand, the mechanism activated. Under air pressure, liquids (first wine, and then water) were directed through the right hand, first into the jug, and then into the bowl in the right proportion. It is the oldest known functional robot.
