In 2021, the Paris Mint opens a new series based on literary styles and authors who have contributed to the history of literature in France and abroad.
Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French writer, a classic of adventure literature, and one of the founders of the science fiction genre. According to UNESCO statistics, Jules Verne’s books are the second most translated in the world, second only to the works of Agatha Christie.
On the obverse of this coin depicting Jules Verne and his worldwide creation, the author plays the role of a magician revealing all his inventions and fantasies from his cylinder. References to From the Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon, Five Weeks in a Balloon, Around the World in Eighty Days, The Mysterious Island, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Journey to the Center of the Earth merge to paint an overall picture of extraordinary journeys.
The reverse side is common for the entire series “The Art of the Pen”. It is inscribed with several symbolic quotes, such as “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” by Voltaire, “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate” by Dante Alighieri, “To be or not to be: that is the question” by William Shakespeare, or “Was micht umbringt, macht mich stärker” by Nietzsche. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and under the name of the series. The abbreviation of the French Republic “RF” is engraved in the lower right corner of the coin, as well as the distinctive mark of the design author Joaquin Jimenez.
