Iris hellenica is widely cultivated a plant of hybrid origin. It is distinguished primarily by its small height (25-55 cm), small leaves and with a light bluish-purple hue to the flowers. It blooms from May to early June. Its main distribution is in the mountains of the northern Peloponnese, where it is most often found in stands of Greek fir (Abies cephalonica).
