Tokelau is made up of three coral atolls
in the heart of the Pacific Ocean and is home
for breathtaking wildlife.
About 1000 years ago, the first Polynesians settled on the islands.
In 1765 British Admiral John Byron
was the first European to discover Tokelau,
and laid the foundation for his later connections
with the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

New Zealand dollar with coins specific to Tokelau.
On the obverse of this complete set of coins
depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the flag of Tokelau.
The reverse depicts a sea turtle, a coconut crab,
a lizard, a butterfly, a native in a canoe,
“HMS Dolphin” (Byron’s sailing ship),
a native blowing a conch and three thresher sharks.
