5 euro Portugal 2025 – Cape Saint Vincent Lighthouse
€12.00
Inaugurating the “Portuguese Lighthouses” series, this coin, designed by José João de Brito, commemorates the Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse, functioning since 1846. After an initial period of operation, the lighthouse was abandoned and nearly fell into disrepair. However, after 11 years of improvements, it was restored to service in 1908.
The Cape San Vicente Lighthouse is one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe: its two 1000-watt lamps are visible for up to 60 km. Situated on the edge of the cape, it attracts numerous visitors each year, and the Portuguese Navy has built a museum and tourist center on the site.
The coin’s design highlights the historical value of Cabo de São Vicente. The obverse features the silhouette of the lighthouse and its name, along with the Portuguese coat of arms. The reverse displays the denomination and year of issue.
