Coin Set – Greece

This set consists of seven Greek coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 drachmas. This is the country’s national coin series before the introduction of the euro in 2002. They are not currently legal tender and have only collector’s value.

The obverse of the coins features portraits of people: historical or mythological figures, and sometimes contemporaries. The purpose of this design was to highlight Greece’s cultural heritage, history, science, and art. The reverse of the coins, in addition to the denominations, features various images telling the country’s history. For example, a ship symbolizes maritime history and trade, leaves point to the country’s rich natural diversity and agriculture, and atoms reflect the country’s commitment to science and innovation.
