Roll 2 Euro Latvia 2026 – Christmas Markets

€59.00

This issue is dedicated to one of the most heartfelt and warm European traditions – Christmas markets. For residents of the Baltics and throughout Europe, they are more than just a festive marketplace, but a living embodiment of winter coziness, where ancient city squares are filled with the aroma of cinnamon, hot drinks, and freshly baked gingerbread. The origins of this tradition date back to the Middle Ages, and for Latvia, it also holds special historical significance: according to legend, it was in the country’s capital in 1510 that the Brotherhood of Blackheads put up and decorated the first public Christmas tree in Europe. The Christmas market on Dome Square in Riga remains an important part of Latvia’s cultural heritage, uniting artisans, age-old folk customs, and a magical sense of celebration.

The obverse of the coin depicts a decorated Christmas tree with a shining star at its top, surrounded by cozy market tents. In the foreground, a character in a warm jacket and hat holds a hot treat, and in front of him stands a character dressed as a rooster wearing a scarf – a direct reference to the famous roosters perched on the spires of Riga’s churches.
