2 euro Andorra 2026 – 50th anniversary of the consecration of the New Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell BU

The coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the new Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell ( Santuari nou de Meritxell ). Our Lady of Meritxell is the official patroness of Andorra, and her sanctuary is the country’s main spiritual center, uniting the history, national identity, and faith of its people. The original ancient temple was destroyed by fire in 1972, after which the distinguished Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill created the majestic building of the new sanctuary, which was inaugurated in 1976. This architectural masterpiece blends harmoniously into the rugged mountain landscape, becoming a true symbol of the rebirth and continuity of the Andorran people’s traditions.

The obverse of the coin features a detailed reproduction of the recognizable architectural motifs of the new Meritxell Sanctuary: arched structures, wall fragments, and the silhouette of a tower. The reverse traditionally displays the face value. The coin comes in a special numismatic card featuring an image of the sanctuary.
