This is the first in a three-year series of Animals on Irish Coins, based on the first coins of Independent Ireland, designed by Percy Metcalfe and issued in 1928. Percy Metcalfe’s animal designs remained on Irish coins until the introduction of the euro.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Republic of Ireland and the year of issue. On the reverse – a horse with a foal.
