North Carolina – 13th Edition of the American Innovation Series.

The University of North Carolina became the first public university to officially open in the country when classes were organized in 1795. It was the only state university to award degrees in the 18th century. To date, the university awards doctoral degrees in educational leadership, marine biology, nursing practice, and psychology. The university also offers many distance learning options.

The obverse depicts a stack of three textbooks with the words “FIRST STATE UNIVERSITY” on the spine of a middle book. A lamp of knowledge rises above the books, and olive branches curl along the edge of the picture.

The reverse depicts the Statue of Liberty in profile with the words IN GOD WE TRUST and “$ 1”. Year of minting, mint mark and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are applied to the edge of the coins.
