On the occasion of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Monnaie de Paris pays homage to this renowned international competition with a collection dedicated to sport, its values, athletes and the heritage of the host country. Olympic and Paralympic Games are celebrated.
The origins of fencing can be found in swordplay, which has been practiced for thousands of years, as evidenced by depictions of swordsmen dating back to around 1190 BC. Later, fencing, originally a form of military training, became a sport under the influence of French, Italian and German fencing masters. Fencing is a long-standing Olympic sport, introduced at the 1896 Athens Games and has been present ever since. Women’s fencing was included in the 1924 Games in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events using three types of weapons: rapier, epee and saber.
The reverse side of the series depicts a view of Paris, where the Seine River appears as an athletics track. The Eiffel Tower rises above the city and illuminates the competition. The PARIS2024 emblem completes this composition.
