1 US Dollar 2018 Native American Peoples – Jim Thorpe
€6.00
As part of the U.S. commemorative coin series, a $1 coin has been released dedicated to Jim Thorpe, a legendary athlete and Olympic champion whose achievements in track and field, football and baseball made him one of the greatest figures in the history of American sports.
Thorpe won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics, becoming the first person to achieve such feats. In addition to track and field, he was an American football star and played for professional baseball and basketball teams. In 1920, he became the first president of the National Football League (NFL).
The coin’s reverse features a portrait of Thorpe, along with two dynamic scenes depicting his athletic achievements: on the left, he is seen running at the 1912 Olympics; on the right, he is seen playing American football. The inscription “WA-THO-HUK” represents his name in the Sauk and Fox language. The coin has “JIM THORPE” and “$1” at the top and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” at the bottom.
The coin’s design highlights Thorpe’s multi-faceted talent and his contributions to American sports.
