1 US dollar 2026 Wisconsin – Cray-1 Supercomputer

€5.00

The coin is part of the “America’s Innovations” series, dedicated to the major technological achievements and inventions of each U.S. state. This issue pays tribute to the state of Wisconsin and one of the most important computing devices in history—the Cray-1 supercomputer. Created by Seymour Cray (the father of supercomputing technology) in Chippewa Falls, the Cray-1 held the title of the world’s fastest supercomputer from 1976 to 1982, achieving an incredible performance of 170 megaflops for its time thanks to its innovative use of integrated circuits.

The reverse depicts a stylized overhead view of the legendary Cray-1 supercomputer. The machine’s unique semicircular design not only optimized the length of its internal cables but also created the famous “C” shape, while the external cooling benches were once nicknamed “the most expensive sofa in the world.” The obverse traditionally features the profile of the Statue of Liberty, the denomination, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and a commemorative plaque with the Liberty Bell and the number “250” in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
