The Asiatic lion is a rare subspecies found almost exclusively in the Gir forest in India, with a population of about 600-700 individuals. It is smaller than the African lion, with a less bushy mane and a distinctive crease on its belly. Lives in small prides, hunts deer, antelope and wild boar, sometimes attacking livestock. The species is protected as it remains vulnerable due to its limited habitat.
