The coin is dedicated to Ely Samuel Parker, a Seneca Indian, US Army officer, engineer and tribal diplomat who served as Secretary of War for Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. When Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on the morning of April 9, 1865, Parker himself handed over the official papers of surrender. The city of Parker in Arizona was named in his honor.
Obverse: Ely Samuel Parker in army uniform. The pen and book, and the likeness of his signature, are emblematic of his experience as a skilled communicator. The inscriptions “TONAWANDA SENECA” and “HA-SA-NO-AN-DA” express recognition of his tribe and the name given to him at birth.
Reverse: portrait of Sacagawea with her young son Jean-Baptiste.
