The $1 coin representing Kentucky commemorates the invention of bluegrass music. Bluegrass has roots in traditional English, Scottish and Irish ballads and dance tunes, as well as traditional African American blues and jazz.
The obverse features the banjo, an important bluegrass instrument, tilted to one side, alluding to the rhythm and movement of the music. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “BLUEGRASS” and “KENTUCKY”.
The reverse depicts the Statue of Liberty in profile with the words IN GOD WE TRUST and “$ 1”. Year of minting, mint mark and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are applied to the edge of the coins.
