2.5 euro Belgium 2022 – 100 Years of Bird Protection in Belgium
€18.00
In the last century, catching birds seemed almost like a national sport. Winged animals were caught for their feathers, they ended up on our plates or had to participate in chaffin singing contests. The way they were captured was also downright brutal, leading to certain death. Around 1922, people in Belgium began to band together to end bird abuse. Gradually, we began to care about the welfare of birds, and legislation and regulations ensured a more humane treatment of birds. Birds native to Belgium are depicted on the coin card in a pseudo-scientific and nostalgic way. This refers to more than a century ago, when interest in birds grew into wonder. The coin depicts a happily whistling robin. The male lives in Belgium all year round and is a symbol of hope.
