The coin depicts King Tomislav, the first ruler who was crowned in 925 and united the Croatian lands into a single kingdom. His reign is considered the beginning of Croatia’s state history, as well as a symbol of its independence and European affiliation. The monument to King Tomislav, erected in Zagreb, has long been an important national symbol; his image previously adorned the 1,000 kuna banknote.
