€8.00
The 2014 €2 commemorative coin is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the historic unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece. After a long period of British protectorate, the archipelago officially became part of the Greek state on May 21, 1864, fulfilling the islanders’ long-held dream of freedom and national unity.
The obverse of the coin depicts a seven-pointed star (heptagram), the traditional symbol of the seven main Ionian Islands ( Eptanisa ). Between the rays of the star are engraved historical emblems of the islands: the ancient ship of Corfu, the trident of Poseidon (Paxi), the head of Odysseus (Ithaca), and other ancient symbols.
