Manolis Andronicos (1919–1992) was one of the most important archaeologists in Greece. In 1977, he discovered the royal tombs of Vergina, from which the magnificent finds that came to light testify to the glory of ancient Macedonian civilization. The coin features a portrait of Manolis Andronicos. Along the left-hand edge of the center of the coin is the inscription “MANOLIS ANDRONICOS 1919-1992”, the year of mintage and the palm-shaped emblem of the Greek Mint; along the right-hand edge of the center of the coin are the words “HELLENIC REPUBLIC” (in Greek). There is also a monogram of the artist (George Stamatopoulos) on the right side of the coin. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union flag.
