To commemorate the bicentenary of the death of the famous Greek War of Independence heroine Laskarina Bouboulina (1771-1825), the Hellenic Mint is issuing a €2 commemorative coin.
Bouboulina was born in Constantinople and grew up on the island of Spetses. Having inherited a considerable fortune, she directed all her funds to support the Greek Revolution: she created a flotilla armed with the frigate “Agamemnon” and formed a private army. Her stormy participation in the sieges of Nafplion, Monamvasia and Tripolis made her a symbol of patriotic devotion. After the civil war, she was exiled, and in 1825 she died tragically in a family quarrel.
