Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909-2012) – Italian neuroscientist, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which she received together with Stanley Cohen for the discovery of growth factors. Thanks to this discovery, scientists have a better understanding of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. At twenty-seven, she received a degree in medicine, and four years later, another in psychiatry and neurology. From 2001 until her death, she also served in the Italian Senate as a senator for life. This award was given to her for her significant scientific contributions. On April 22, 2009, she became the first Nobel laureate to reach 100 years of age.
