2 euro Malta 2023 – 225th anniversary of the arrival of the French in Malta

The French occupation of Malta began in June 1798, when the troops of the First Republic under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte landed on the island and forced the Order of Malta and the garrison of the island to surrender, and ended in 1800 after a two-year siege led by the anti-French coalition. For two years, Malta was actually part of the possessions of the French Republic, and French legislation was in force on its territory, according to which many republican innovations were introduced. During the occupation of Malta by the French, free education, freedom of the press were introduced, the nobility and the feudal system were abolished by law, the inquisition and slavery in any form were prohibited. However, disgruntled residents, led by the National Assembly, rebelled and forced all French forces to retreat to Valletta. Since it was impossible for the militias to take the city immediately, they began to build siege fortifications, surrounding the harbor and starting shelling the French positions. A year later, British help arrived. In September 1800, after a long siege, the French surrendered, and Malta became a British possession.
