Albert I (1848-1922) full name – Albert Honore Charles Grimaldi – the eleventh prince of the Grimaldi dynasty.
Prince Albert was born in Paris in 1848.
Having reached the age of majority, Albert began service in the Spanish Navy, where he served as a navigator for several years.
Leaving military service after the end of the war, Albert took up the study of the oceans. He personally took part in 28 expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. He created a number of instruments designed to study the processes occurring in the oceans. As part of the expeditions of Prince Albert, geographers, botanists, and zoologists worked; the results of the expeditions were summarized in a book called Albert’s Way of the Navigator. He owns the invention of a number of instruments and techniques for ocean research. Subsequently, the prince founded the famous Institute of Oceanography, including, among other things, the famous oceanarium.
Albert was the initiator of organizing a car race in Monte Carlo to attract more tourists.
Albert also laid the foundation for the passion for philately among members of the princely family and laid the foundation for the famous stamp collection now on display in the museum.
