World Youth Day is an event for young people organized by the Catholic Church every three (or sometimes two) years. World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

World Youth Day 2023 will be a Catholic holiday that will take place in Lisbon, Portugal and was originally planned to be celebrated in the summer of 2022.

The coin depicts a pilgrimage cross and human figures of various sizes and textures, arranged around the cross as if on a globe and folded with two hands in an inviting gesture. The escutcheon with five bezants of the Portuguese shield is at the bottom left.
