2 euro San Marino 2022 – 530th anniversary of the death of Piero Della Francesca

The coin depicts one of the most famous works of the artist – Portrait of Federigo da Montefeltro. The painting was painted in 1475 and is kept in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Piero della Francesca (1415 – 1492) was an Italian painter of the Quattrocento (15th century) who applied new techniques to the visual arts of his time. At present, he is valued primarily as a fresco painter, but in his time he was also known as a geometer and mathematician. His painting was characterized by a serene style and use of geometric forms, especially with regard to perspective and light. He is one of the main and fundamental figures of the Renaissance.
