The best works of Perugino are those created before 1500. Among them, the fresco “Handing the Keys to the Apostle Peter” in the Sistine Chapel (c. 1482) and the altarpiece “Lamentation of Christ” (1495, Pitti Gallery, Florence) stand out for their harmony and clarity of composition.

The owner of two active workshops, in Florence and Perugia, Pietro Perugino was for several decades the most famous and most influential Italian artist.
