Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873) – Italian romantic writer.

Alessandro did not study well, but at the age of 15 a passion for poetry woke up in him, and he began to write sonnets. In the period from 1806 to 1807, during his stay in Paris, he first appeared before the public in the role of a poet. In 1819, Manzoni published his first tragedy, “Conte di Carmagnola,” which broke all the classical principles in literature and fueled lively disagreement. In one article, she was heavily criticized, after which Goethe defended the work. The death of Napoleon in 1821 prompted him to write the poem “Cinque maggio” (“Fifth of May”), which became one of the most popular poems in Italian. In September 1822, Alessandro finished work on the novel The Betrothed and in 1827 the book was published, which brought the author great fame. Italy escorted Manzoni on his last journey with almost royal luxury, and the composer Giuseppe Verdi wrote his famous Requiem in honor of the first anniversary of the writer’s death.
