The coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of radio engineer and diplomat Guglielmo Marconi. He was one of the most outstanding minds to emerge from Italy. In 1909, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy.
The coin depicts Marconi with Pope Pius XI and Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli at the inauguration of Vatican Radio in 1931. The lower portion of the portrait is decorated with a curved line symbolizing a radio wave. The reverse of the coin traditionally displays its face value and a map of Europe.
