The polar regions, also called the cold zones of the Earth, are the regions of the planet that surround its geographic poles (North and South poles) that lie within the polar circles.

The coin consists of 3 components: an outer ring, an inner copper-nickel alloy disc and a purple light-conducting polymer ring. The reverse of the coin depicts the landscape of the polar climatic zone with glaciers, icebergs and a leopard seal in the ocean. The obverse of the coin depicts a German eagle, year of issue, denomination, country name and 12 stars of the European Union.

Each yard has its own shade of purple polymer ring.
