The 80th Anniversary of VE Day – commemorative coin to mark the historic date from the Royal Mint

May 8, 1945 marked the end of World War II in Europe, a day when millions around the world celebrated the advent of long-awaited peace. The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of this significant date, and in honor of the anniversary, the Royal Mint has issued a commemorative coin to commemorate Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).

The coin is a moving tribute to the events and people that made the world possible.

The reverse features an updated version of John Mills’ famous design, the dove of peace, symbolizing hope and restoration. Winston Churchill’s words, “IN PEACE GOODWILL” have now been added to the composition, reflecting the spirit of unity and peace that prevailed on that momentous day.

The obverse is traditionally adorned with a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.
