Description: The coin depicts a satellite orbiting the Earth, ESRO 2B. It was the first successful satellite of the European Space Research Organization to be launched in May 1968. ESRO 2B, also known as IRIS (International Radiation Investigation Satellite), focused on X-rays, cosmic radiation and the Earth’s radiation zones while in orbit. The mintmark of Utrecht (Hermes sau) is located below the emblem of the President of the Mint of Belgium (coat of arms of the commune of Herzele), the country code BE and the initials LL (coin designer Luc Luycx). The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union flag.
