With the introduction of the euro on January 1, 2023, the Croatian kuna will become a closed chapter in national history. This is a complete latest set of Kuna coins. A unique currency are the inscriptions on the coins. Depending on whether they were minted in even or odd years, the names of the native animals and plants depicted are given either in Latin or Croatian. The currency name Kuna is the Croatian word for marten and comes from the use of marten skins as a means of payment in the Middle Ages.
