These are the first Czech coins after the collapse of Czechoslovakia. Their motifs are focused on the history of the country and the urban landscape of Prague. For example, they depict the crown of Wenceslas of Bohemia and his statue on Wenceslas Square. The alleged Bohemian duke was killed by his brother and after his death became the patron saint of the country. Also of historical interest is the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Brno. It is curious that its bells ring daily at 11 o’clock, and not at 12 o’clock. According to legend, during the Thirty Years’ War, the Swedes promised to stop the offensive at 12 o’clock, after which the inhabitants rang the bells earlier. The 50 crown coin depicts a view of Prague with the famous Charles Bridge.
