After the victorious war of independence
against the Spaniards sovereignty of the Dominican Republic
was far from achieved.
First, it was united with Haiti in 1822,
and behind the struggle for independence from Haiti in 1844
followed by a new colonization of Spain 17 years later.
Spanish rule finally ended
in 1865 with the Restoration War.
Many heroes came out of various wars,
some of which are noted in this
full set of Dominican peso coins:
Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez,
Matthias Ramon Mella and Gregorio Luperon.
While their portraits are depicted on the reverses,
the obverses feature the national coat of arms and denominations.
