Volodymyr the Great (c. 960–1015) is considered the most important grand duke of the medieval federation of Kievan Rus. He initiated the Christianization of the state in 988 and therefore is revered as a saint in the Orthodox churches of Ukraine and Russia. The 1 hryvnia coin of this Ukrainian set depicts Volodymyr with a cross in his hands and a model of an Orthodox church. The rest show the national coat of arms. This is the country’s first national set of coins since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some coins were minted as early as 1992, but were not issued until the 1996 currency reform.
