Maria Montessori (1872-1952) was an Italian physician and educator. She is known for her unique teaching method that is based on a system of free raising and is named after her. This pedagogical system is also used nowadays in public and private schools around the world.
Based on her observations, she realised many practices that became a special feature of her method and teaching philosophy. She replaced the heavy furniture in the classrooms with lighter-weighted tables and chairs, so the students could move them and also moved studying materials to lower shelves for easier accessibility. She expanded the spectrum of pf practical lessons, for example, self care and keeping the room clean and also self hygiene and environmental care, like washing hands, placing the flowers, taking care of pets/home-kept animals and preparing food. The classrooms were spacious and well-lit, studio-type rooms. Children were allowed to move in the classroom freely during the lessons.
One of the greatest achievements of Montessori was the method of teaching younger kids, that is now known as Montessori method and is described in details in the self-titled book. The method pays most attention to developing personal initiative and natural skills of a child, mostly through practical play. This method allowed children to develop at their own pace and provided educators with a new understanding of child development.
