Although the Cook Islands is “in free association with New Zealand” and the New Zealand dollar is legal tender in both states, the Cook Islands also issue its own coins. In addition to nature, their motifs focus on the unique culture of the Cook Islands’ indigenous people, the Maori, including their seafaring skills honed over the centuries. The obverse features the fourth portrait of the former British Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse depicts an orange, fairy terns, albacore tuna, the figure of the sea god Tangaroa, a mortar and pestle from the island of Atiu, and the double-hulled canoe “Marumuru Atua” under the three constellations Pleiades, Taurus and Orion. The Marumuru Atua is used as a training vessel for traditional Polynesian navigation.
