The Krugerrand is the most popular silver coin produced by the South African Mint in South Africa. The name comes from the surname of the then President of South Africa – Paul Kruger. The second part of the name “rand” is the name of the South African currency. The coin was first issued in 1967, and since then its design has not changed much.
The Krugerrand gold coin is minted from 22-karat gold and weighs 16.97 grams, of which 15.55 grams consists of pure gold (half a troy ounce). In addition to gold, the coin also contains copper, which gives the Krugerrand a distinctive reddish hue that distinguishes it from other gold coins. This gold and copper alloy not only makes the coin visually unique, but also makes it more durable and less prone to scratches and wear.
Despite having no official legal tender or face value, the Krugerrand is fully guaranteed by the South African government.
